Two SMU faculty members have recently authored books that will be published this year and that reflect their passion for education, inclusion, and healthcare, each offering a unique contribution to their respective fields.

Fresno campus Program Director Keisha Lewis-Nesbitt, PHN, RN, MSN, wrote a vibrant and imaginative children’s book titled Adventures in Nursing: Landon and Tandy’s Journey Through Nurseland. This heartwarming story follows two young adventurers as they journey through a magical land filled with heroic nurses, each with a special superpower. From the calm precision of the anesthetist to the compassion of a labor and delivery nurse, Landon and Tandy discover that nursing is more than a job — it’s a calling rooted in care, teamwork, and empathy. The book introduces children to the diverse roles within the nursing profession while promoting the values of kindness and courage.

Yvette Meré-Cook, EdD, OTR/L, chair of SMU’s Occupational Therapy program, authored a groundbreaking guide for educators: Inclusive STEAM Education in Early Childhood. Designed for professionals in both general and special education settings, this practical resource provides strategies for using science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM) to support young children with disabilities. Through real-life vignettes, evidence-based practices, goal-aligned lesson plans, and progress-monitoring templates, Meré-Cook offers a strengths-based, play-centered approach to making early STEAM learning accessible and inclusive for all learners.
